August 31, 2011 - STRI participation in the 17th ISH (International Symposium on High Voltage Engineering) in Germany

STRI actively participated in the 17th ISH (International Symposium on High Voltage Engineering) which was held in Hannover (Germany) during 22-26 of August 2011. The ISH meeting provides a broad communication platform for younger university researchers (often PhD students), professors and researchers from industry dealing with many directions of HV engineering (electromagnetic fields, overvoltages, testing techniques and test procedures, advanced materials, etc.). This year symposium attracted a few hundreds of participants. World-known Leibniz University in Hannover with its beautiful main building hosted the event (Fig. 1) and even Friedrich Leibniz himself was involved in social activities (Fig. 2).

STRI was active in ISH-2011 participating in five reports:

  1. I. Gutman, I. Djurdjevic, S. Berlijn, Á.J. Elíasson, P. Söderström, L. Wallin: "Influence of air-borne volcano ashes on outdoor insulation", C-014. This was presented at both poster and oral sessions.
  2. I. Gutman, J. Lundquist, V. Dubickas, L. Carlshem, R. Kleveborn: "Design of corona/arcing rings when replacing cap-and-pin insulators by composite insulators", A-007. This was presented at the oral session, see Fig. 3
  3. I. Gutman, K. Kondo, R. Matsuoka, R. W. Garcia: "CIGRE Round Robin Pollution Test for polymeric insulators: results in four high-voltage laboratories", C-013. This was presented at the oral session.
  4. G. Heger, I. Gutman, W.L. Vosloo: "Determining Insulation Levels for 220 kV Transmission Lines in Namibia using the IST Software", E-030. This was presented by NamPower (Gernot Heger) at the poster session, see Fig.4.
  5. S. Berlijn, K. Kupisz, R. Jonsdottir: "PLS-CADD as tool for determining the air clearances in tower when voltage upgrading", B-041. This was presented by Konrad Kupisz (see Fig. 5) and Ragnhildur Jonsdottir at the poster session.

Our colleagues from Statnett also presented an interesting contribution: S. Berlijn, A. Olsen, M. Hinteregger, T. Judendorfer, M. Muhr, M. Runde "Voltage upgrading of overhead lines – an insulation coordination challenge", B-040 (presented in oral session by Sonja Berlijn, see Fig. 6), which created an intensive discussion.

In general, the ISH meeting was very useful event with a lot of business contacts and productive work of CIGRE WG C4.03.03 (Igor Gutman is a member) before the event. This group will finish Guidelines for selection and dimensioning of HVDC insulators in the beginning of the next year.
