STRI’s solar power plant participates in a European study exploring how large solar cell installations affect electrical power quality. July 30, 2012 - Igor Gutman receives prestigious lifetime award

STRI is pleased to announce that Dr Igor Gutman is the 2012 recipient of the Claude de Tourreil Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Field of Electrical Insulators.

Already internationally renowned for his outstanding contributions to the enhancement of knowledge of electrical insulators, this award is another commendation from within the industry, for the valuable work Igor has done and continues to do in his specialist field. Read more...

March 30, 2012 - DNV acquires Vattenfall shares in STRI

The cooperation between STRI and DNV has taken a new step by DNV purchase of 12,5 % of the shares in STRI from Vattenfall. STRI welcome DNV to the owner group and look forward to develop our services together with DNV.

December 2, 2011 - STRI on EWEA discussing wind, HVDC and cables for offshore grids

STRI participated in the OFFSHORE 2011 event in Amsterdam 29 November – 1 December, 2011 arranged by EWEA. This was the world's largest offshore wind energy event with more than 7000 participants and almost 500 exhibitors. The press release in conjunction with the new report "Wind in our sails" stated: "Over 141 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind energy capacity is built, under construction, consented, or planned in Europe." December 1, 2011 - STRI at the forefront of Smart Grid Technologies

STRI is involved in several "Smart Grid" projects focusing especially on wind power integration, storage, communication and the application of power electronics. This involves a Micro Grid Research Development and Demonstration platform used within a High Voltage Valley project with financing from Vinnova, the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems. STRI is now participating in the "2nd IEEE PES International Conference and Exhibition on "Innovative Smart Grid Technologies " ISGT 2011 in Manchester UK (December 5-7) with several activities. November 30, 2011 - IEC 61850 Hands on training continuing success

STRI is continuing arranging our popular hands on training courses integrating multivendor IEDs,tools and test equipment. The latest general course was held in Gothenburg, Sweden 19-21 October, 2011 with participants from 8 companies and universities from five countries. The latest customer specific course was for Svenska Kraftnät (The Swedish TSO) in Sundbyberg, Sweden 16-17 November, 2011. In total STRI has now arranged 23 hands-on-courses all around the world in all major continents for almost 400 participants from 140 companies in 33 countries. Read more...

November 3, 2011 - Inauguration of the new high voltage test hall at STRI

The inauguration of an additional high voltage test hall in Ludvika at STRI was effected with speech of Dan Wikström and the chairman of the board of STRI Johan Söderström. September 20, 2011 - Integration of Distributed Generation in The Power System – new book by STRI authors

Prof Math Bollen from STRI and Dr. Fainan Hassan (formerly at STRI, currently with Alstom Grid) have together published a 500-page book on integration of new production in the power grid. The book gives a comprehensive overview of the way in which new types of production can be integrated in the electricity network (the "grid"); small production units as well as large wind farms are considered; the impact on the distribution network and on the transmission system are both treated in this book. STRI actively participated in the 17th ISH (International Symposium on High Voltage Engineering) which was held in Hannover (Germany) during 22-26 of August 2011. The ISH meeting provides a broad communication platform for younger university researchers (often PhD students), professors and researchers from industry dealing with many directions of HV engineering (electromagnetic fields, overvoltages, testing techniques and test procedures, advanced materials, etc.). June 22, 2011 - Igor Gutman from STRI is appointed to the Honorary Professor degree in St. Petersburg, Russia

On the 14th of June 2011 Dr. Igor Gutman was appointed to the degree of the Honorary Professor at Petersburg Power Engineering Institute of Professional Development (PEIPK), "for an important contribution to power engineering specialists training". The ceremony was performed during plenary session of the International Seminar "Innovative proposals to obtain safe, reliable and effective operation in power sector" with participation of researchers from different countries. June 8, 2011 - One Million Volt UHVDC world record!

HVDC allows for more efficient power transmission with less relative losses over long distances compared to AC. This has been proven for +/- 600 kV HVDC since the Itaipu project in Brazil and now with the +/- 800 kV UHVDC projects in operation and planned for China and India. STRI has actively participated in the development and testing of the 800 kV UHVDC technology both for converter station, switchgear and transmission lines. By increasing the voltage to one million volt further the relative losses can be reduced even more. Read more...

May 25, 2011 - STRI participation in the 14th IWAIS (International Workshop on Atmospheric Icing of Structures) in China

On behalf of Svenska Kraftnät STRI actively participated in the 14th IWAIS (International Workshop on Atmospheric Icing of Structures) which was held in Chongqing (China) during 8-13 May 2011. The IWAIS forum provides a unique worldwide communication platform for researchers dealing with icing phenomena and their consequences. The workshop focused on field and laboratory research, meteorological studies, modelling and simulations of icing, the physics of ice and monitoring related to the effects of atmospheric icing on structures. May 6, 2011 - STRI signs cooperation agreement with DNV

STRI has signed an agreement with DNV (Det Norske Veritas), in an effort to meet the increasing market demand for advanced solutions for power transmission in the offshore sector. The two organisations have highly complementary skills. DNV has more than 40 years of experience in risk management from the offshore oil and gas sector and 30 years of offshore wind experience. April 20, 2011 - STRI Independent and accredited High Voltage Laboratory at INMR

STRI participated as "Official Test Laboratory" at 2011 INMR World Congress on Insulators, Arresters, Bushings and Cable Accessories in Seoul, South Korea April 17 – April 20. In addition STRI senior specialists Dr. Jan Lundquist and Dr. Igor Gutman together with STRI senior partners Alberto Pigini and William Chisholm gave several appreciated presentations on the development of insulation, surge arresters and AC/DC conversion.
