September 7, 2010 - STRI and FGC, Russia sign cooperation agreement
An agreement for collaboration between FGC (Russia) and STRI AB (Sweden) has been signed. The aim is the establishment of mutually beneficial and long-term exchange and collaboration in the area of power engineering, assistance in implementation of innovative equipment and ready-for-use solutions in operation of electrical network system. This includes high voltage equipment and control of active and reactive power used for the establishment of SMART GRID. Read more...
September 6, 2010 - STRI powerful expansion
STRI is expanding to meet an increasing demand on consulting services and high voltage testing. 15 qualified engineers will be hired and the high voltage laboratory will be extended for 75% higher capacity compared to today. At the same time STRI is expanding the Smart Grid Research Development and Demonstration platform as part of a High Voltage Valley initiative and cooperation within InnoEnergy for European Institute of Technology (EIT). September 3, 2010 - Thank you for visiting STRI at CIGRE
STRI participated in CIGRE 2010 in Paris both with several technical papers and contributions for the questions of special reporters and a small exhibition including the STRI IEC61850 interoperability test equipment. Around 150 CIGRE delegates visited STRI exhibition stand to discuss issues on insulation, line design, HVDC, cable testing, EMF, AC/DC conversion, merging units for optical measurement etc. But a very small & smart device created the highest interest among many of our visitors – The Smart Temperature Sensor. June 17, 2010 - STRI - The Ultra HVDC Specialist
Ultra High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) with 800 kV is now being implemented in China and India to efficiently transmit large amounts of energy over long distances from remote hydro power plants. STRI has been involved in the testing of this new technology during the past couple of years both for China and India. This includes testing of basically all components such as bushings and converters as well as a long term test of a complete system during different seasons energized at 850 kV for ABB. Now a number of tests have been performed for the transmission line isolation for the first 800kV UHVDC line in India. Read more...
June 15, 2010 - STRI at IEEE PES Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies
The first Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT) Europe, is sponsored by the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) and hosted by Chalmers University of Technology October 10-13, 2010 Chalmers Lindholmen, Gothenburg, Sweden. STRI will participate in a tutorial on "Smart Grid and Interoperability Standards". Read more...
June 14, 2010 - A European centre for Smart Grids and electrical energy storage
EIT - European Institute of Technology and Innovation has within "Sustainable energy" designated "KIC InnoEnergy" as the new European consortium for innovative energy technologies, energy research and education. STRI will in close cooperation with the Royal Institute of technology and Uppsala University participate as network partner in the Swedish collocation center responsible for Smart Grids and electrical energy storage. May 24, 2010 - How does the vulcano ashes affect the power grid?
On Thursday, the 15th of April STRI has been approached by Vattenfall and Svenska Kraftnät for fast investigation on possible influence of eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano on outdoor insulation in Sweden (see example of eruption and ashes on the road nearby the volcano taken on the 16th of April). In the worst case one should be prepared for washing of some overhead lines and substations. During the same day STRI organized a number of telephone meetings with experts from: CRIEPI (Japan), Landsnet (Iceland), NIIPT (Russia) and meteorological consultants from Norway. An intensive literature search revealed practical experience from BPA and Portland General Electric Company from USA. Read more...
March 31, 2010 - STRI hosts the first interoperability test for wind energy communication
IEC 61400-25 is the first international communications standard designed especially for wind power applications. IEC 61400-25 is based on IEC 61850, which over the last five years has revolutionized substations automation. The new standard for wind power applications includes both standardized names and models of wind plants components such as turbines and rotors, as well as maps of this data to several different protocols. Between March 23rd and 25th a workshop was held at STRI in Ludvika with 20 participants from 5 manufacturers of PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), 4 manufacturers of SCADA and test clients as well as some observers from interested power companies like Vattenfall and Statkraft.
