August 11, 2006 - Visit of test centre in Russia: detection of support and hollow porcelain insulators
Porcelain has been, and is still extensively used, as insulation material in high voltage applications for more than 120 years in many outdoor applications. Due to this, there are many relatively old insulators still in service. However, porcelain is a brittle material, thus some cracks in the porcelain body may appear in service. This issue is of great concern to many of the utilities worldwide. Read more...
August 10, 2006 - STRI at Nordac 2006 The 2006 edition of the Nordic Distribution Automation Conference (Nordac) has taken place in Stockholm, 21 and 22 August. STRI presented a keynote paper on power-quality and EMC. STRI is further co-author of five regular papers, four of which have been written together with our co-operation partners. The papers include results from the EU-DEEP project, from our co-operation with Luleå University of Technology and Skellefteå Kraft, and from our co-operation with Unipower. Read more...

The book is entitled "Signal processing of power quality disturbances" and was written together with Irene Gu, professor in signal processing at Chalmers University of Technology. The book contains practical descriptions of power quality phenomena and relevant standards as well as mathematical details of advanced signal-processing techniques. Read more...
July 13, 2006 - Collaborative paper ESKOM - STRI - TAP - University of KwaZulu-Natal
At present a few countries are looking into possibility to convert their HVAC transmission lines into HVDC lines. The availability of cost effective power electronic technology having higher current ratings makes the conversion of an existing high voltage AC transmission line to high voltage DC a viable possibility. The objective is to use an existing AC transmission line and to operate the installed conductors at their full rated current carrying capacity, thus optimising the energy transfer by using DC. In this conversion process the requirement for the external insulation is in the most cases the main dimensioning parameter for the line design. ESKOM, STRI, TAP and the University of KwaZulu-Natal presented a collaborative paper at the HVDC 2006 Congress "Meeting the Power Challenges of the Future Using HVDC Technology Solutions", July 12-14, 2006, Durban, South Africa.
