May 25, 2011 - STRI participation in the 14th IWAIS (International Workshop on Atmospheric Icing of Structures) in China

On behalf of Svenska Kraftnät STRI actively participated in the 14th IWAIS (International Workshop on Atmospheric Icing of Structures) which was held in Chongqing (China) during 8-13 May 2011. The IWAIS forum provides a unique worldwide communication platform for researchers dealing with icing phenomena and their consequences. The workshop focused on field and laboratory research, meteorological studies, modelling and simulations of icing, the physics of ice and monitoring related to the effects of atmospheric icing on structures. Newest development and applications of instrumentation and equipments for ice measurements, ice prevention and de-icing facilities were presented, together with the validation of the most modern achievements in the field of modelling and forecasting of icing events. The meeting attracted more than 260 participants, among them about 200 from China and more than 60 from other countries, where issues with ice and snow exist (Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Norway, UK, Russia, Sweden, UK and USA).

  • I. Gutman, J. Lundengård, N. Gustavsson, A. Bosma: "Comparative Performance of Hollow Silicone Rubber and Porcelain Apparatus Insulators under Specific Ice and Salt Fog Conditions of Iceland" (in collaboration with Landsnet from Iceland and ABB from Sweden)
  • H. Homma, K. Yaji, G. Sakata, T. Aso, A. Dernfalk, I. Gutman: "Development of Flashover Voltage Test Method for Snow Accreted Insulators - Preliminary Test with 33 kV Class Insulator Samples" (in collaboration with CRIEPI from Japan)
  • I. Gutman, G. Porporkin: "Comparative Performance of Conventional 220 kV Insulator Strings and Multi-Chamber Insulator-Arresters Strings Under Specific Ice Conditions of Russia" (in collaboration with Streamer from Russia)

STRI was active in IWAIS-2011 participating in three reports dealing with the simulation of specific and very different environments of Iceland (salt fog with defined salinity at zero temperature in combination with thin ice); Japan (packed wet snow with defined conductivity) and Russia (glazed thick ice with defined conductivity):

STRI (Igor Gutman) also co-chaired Oral Session C2: Flashover and Dielectric Performances of Ice and Snow-covered Insulators.

Preliminary the next IWAIS meeting may take place in Canada (2013) following by Sweden (2015).
