December 2, 2011 - STRI on EWEA discussing wind, HVDC and cables for offshore grids
STRI participated in the OFFSHORE 2011 event in Amsterdam 29 November – 1 December, 2011 arranged by EWEA. This was the world's largest offshore wind energy event with more than 7000 participants and almost 500 exhibitors. The press release in conjunction with the new report "Wind in our sails" stated: "Over 141 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind energy capacity is built, under construction, consented, or planned in Europe."
So why did STRI participate in this very big event? One reason is that EWEA stated that in order to connect all this off-shore wind farms we need HVDC-VSC and cables. STRI has so far tested the majority of installed HVDC-VSC converters in operation and we have recently expanded our testing facilities with two more test halls for cables in addition to the existing three general testing halls we already have- Because one of the major bottle necks that was discussed was "CABLES". Both the need for higher capacity and voltage but also the actual production facilities. Therefore it is important that STRI now can offer testing capacity to all major suppliers of HVDC cables. (And naturally HVAC cables).
Besides our testing facilities STRI can offer consulting services for both HVDC, wind and cables. For more information see enclosures. STRI participated in a workshop on Offshore grid connection where both the technical challenges and grid code requirements where discussed. STRI is here working together with Statnett and Svenska Kraftnät (Norwegian and Swedish TSO) and has studied different multi terminal and DC grid applications.
