July 30, 2012 - Igor Gutman receives prestigious lifetime award

STRI is pleased to announce that Dr Igor Gutman is the 2012 recipient of the Claude de Tourreil Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Field of Electrical Insulators.

Already internationally renowned for his outstanding contributions to the enhancement of knowledge of electrical insulators, this award is another commendation from within the industry, for the valuable work Igor has done and continues to do in his specialist field.

"It is an honor to receive this lifetime achievement award. It is deeply moving to be recognized for my contributions in the field of electrical insulators. At the same time I treat this award of being not only personal, but belonging to the whole STRI, i.e. wonderful team of colleagues who always support me" said Igor.

Early career

After graduating with a Masters and PhD from the State Polytechnic University in St. Petersburg, Russia, Igor embarked on a professional career that has already spanned three decades. In 1981 he began his first job as a Junior Researcher and finished this part of his career as Senior Researcher in the High Voltage Technology Department at the Leningrad HVDC Power Transmission Research Institute.

Senior Specialist at STRI

Igor joined STRI in 1994, where he is currently Technology Manager and Senior Specialist in insulation. His specialist areas relate mainly to optimizing selection of outdoor insulators and defining the most appropriate diagnostics and maintenance. Igor’s activities are concentrated primarily on pollution and ageing performance of composite insulators, as well as ice and snow performance of insulation and bird-induced flashovers.

Leading authority on insulators

Igor has published extensively on the topic of insulators and has presented more than 150 conference and journal papers. He is a member of Swedish IEC TC 36 "Insulators" and active in many working groups within CIGRE/IEC. Igor is Convener of CIGRE WG D1.44. He has been a Senior Member of IEEE since 2005.

Honorary Professor

Igor was granted the Degree of Honorary Professor at the St. Petersburg Power Engineering Institute of Professional Development (PEIPK) in 2011.

About the Claude de Tourreil Memorial Award

The Claude de Tourreil Memorial Award was established several years ago by INMR, to honor the memory of the late Claude de Tourreil, one of the insulator industry’s most respected and influential personalities.

This Award is given by INMR, the world’s leading technical journal in the field of electrical insulators, surge arrestors, bushings and related components.
